SATELLITE ARTS

This online program supports artists living with an intellectual disability access to the supportive studio.

Watch now to learn more about Satellite Arts.

Satellite Arts supports participants in developing their art practice by offering the opportunity to join an online creative community. The program gives artists access to professional mentorship and assistance from a highly qualified team of staff artists and the chance to create, discuss, and explore art in a supportive group environment.

The content is tailored to each artist’s personal working preferences, with the option to join both individual and group sessions on Zoom.

This program operates on a sessional basis each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with artists attending according to their level of interest or other commitments.

Satellite Arts artists also have the opportunity to explore, develop and expand their art practice through a range of disciplines, with an optional materials kit available for purchase.

“I asked Mum if there were any new art programs I could join, she found Arts Project’s Satellite Arts online and joined me up. It’s Melbourne-based but I can attend it by Zoom, normally I’d have to go to Melbourne but I don’t have to because I can do it online. I’ve found it really good, they’re very supportive and easy to talk to,” – Kirstie Newcombe, Satellite Arts artist, Colac

Satellite Arts aims to provide a platform for which artists can work towards the following outcomes:

  • Ability to critically reflect on personal art practice
  • Actively engage with creative networks and communities online
  • Critically engage with external exhibitions
  • Create finished artworks which are then documented
  • Set goals for future projects
  • Inclusion in an online group exhibition (private to program participants)

HISTORY

In 2020, the Arts Project studio developed Satellite Arts in response to the COVID-19 crisis requiring all staff and artists to remain at home. Staff collaborated with over 60 per cent of studio artists by  delivering art supplies to their homes and meeting daily on Zoom to continue their studio practices.

In November 2020, the Melbourne Awards announced Arts Project Australia as the Arts and Culture Champion, recognising the innovation and resilience of the studio and success of the online program. In light of this success, APA decided to continue Satellite Arts alongside the physical studio program, opening Arts Project Australia up to artists across Australia for the first time.

“It’s our honour to be named Arts and Culture Champion,” says APA Director Sue Roff. “2020 has been a huge year for us with our artists working from home. It’s so important to keep creatives creating and sharing their art with the world. We’ve been thrilled to be able to do that during a pandemic.”

Arts Project acknowledges the support of the State Trustees Australia Foundation in 2022/23 to broaden the reach of Satellite Arts into regional Victoria.
